Aims |
|
The expansion developments of 2 motorways, the Kan-etsu and the Joshin-etsu, 2 Shin-kansan super express railway construction projects for the Joh-etsu and the Nagano lines have brought the rescue or project excavation numbers to Gunma at the same level as the other prefectures in Japan under the Cultural Properties Protection Law of 1950.
The Gunma Archaeological Research Foundation was established by the Gunma government as it was the sole agent for rescue archaeology in 1978, aiming to carry out research and study related to those large scaled public development excavation projects. It strives to spread the concept of preservation of historical properties and contributes to promoting the development of culture among the prefecture's citizens.
In 1995 new buildings for the public services and for a third storage house
were set up including; the Excavation Data Area, one of which, displays
archaeological artefacts and offers hands on activities. The Foundation
has got the reputation of being a real archaeology resource centre and
information facility where archaeology can be taught and where people are
able to enjoy the past through various educational programmes and mediums.
